Elphinstone Community Association is in crisis…

We urgently need people to join the committee to keep the group from dissolving.

It would be a great shame if it did, as we have achieved much since the Association’s start in April 2015.
Close relationships were formed with various bodies around the county e.g. the school,  Parent Council, the Community Council, the Area Partnership, Police Scotland and individually with elected councillors who gave us great support in projects we decided to take on.

We constantly fight to promote the rights of the village in matters relating to repairs, maintenance, amenities, and environment.  Community engagement has grown with residents coming to members and asking for things to be done on their behalf and this is a great privilege and responsibility.
  • We fought to bring speeding through the village to a halt and a speed table was installed at the site of the school.  We need more, so the fight needs to go on….
  • We fought for the safety of the kids walking to and from school from North Elphinstone farm and a pavement was installed.  We need more for the safety of the employees of Charles River Laboratories coming and going from their workplace, so the fight needs to go on….
  • We fought for a memorial/remembrance space at the jungle behind the war memorial to no avail.  The fight needs to go on….
  • We fought for an improvement to the playpark at Buxley Road and received a brand new one for our trouble! This battle was won.
  • We need champions to take on the issues of the village, whatever they may be, and to fight until we win or be gracious in defeat when we know the cause is lost.

What WOULD be lost from the village, should ECA dissolve, would be our attempts to promote community participation and spirit.

  • The ‘Annual Fair day’ for the wee ones is a fantastic example of this.  This would be lost.  This has been a huge success, growing year by year, with people coming from all over the county to enjoy a great day out.  This would be missed.
  • Parties and pantomimes would be lost.  Our children would be missing out again.  Our first panto was amazing and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, both young and old.  This would be missed.
  • The Christmas tree ‘switch on’ is another event that has grown since its start and is a wonderful time of togetherness for the residents of the village.  Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council arrange for the tree and the ‘switch on’, but the social side is hosted by ECA.  This would be lost.
  • Remembrance Day is another joint venture from the two groups and, again the social side hosted by ECA. This would be lost.
  • The Peeptoon Post, which is read and loved by many, would be lost.

Being a committee member does not take up much time. Currently, we hold monthly meetings which last for about an hour and support is given from members.  Further support and encouragement is given by East Lothian Tenants and Residents Panel.  This group is behind us all the way and is always readily available when we call out for help.

It would be great if you would give this matter your consideration.  Thank you for reading this.
