Why Join Us?

You talk, we listen!
Why set up a Tenants and Residents Group?
  • Influence housing issues
  • Negotiate with your landlord
  • Give accurate advice and information
  • Campaign on local issues
  • Make a difference
  • Achieve lasting change
What can ELTRP do for you or your group?
  • Our Outreach Worker provides support to local groups to help them get organised – support such as planning ahead, how to organise meetings, writing newsletters, producing flyers, and how to take minutes
  • We can put you in touch with other groups working on similar issues
  • We can help you link with other tenants and residents groups for example to help guest chair your AGM
  • We can tell you what is going on in housing and related issues across East Lothian and across Scotland
  • We can offer support if you face difficulties in your area
  • We can take up issues East Lothian wide if there are problems that affect more than one area

Benefits of Membership of ELTRP

We can help you establish a local Tenants and Residents Group and offer practical support in ensuring your group is effective.

We will:
  • help with writing newsletters
  • assist with publicity
  • give advice on campaigning and planning for action
  • share information on what other TRAs are doing
  • offer training sessions on housing and other issues

Membership also allows your group:
  • voting rights to elect ELTRP's Executive Committee
  • access to our events liability insurance
  • free membership of the national Tenants Information Service (TIS) - provided by East Lothian Council

These benefits are also available to individual social housing tenants who do not have a local TRA in their area.

Group Membership

Full membership is open to tenants and residents groups that meet certain requirements (i.e. they have a constitution, hold 2 open meetings per year, elect a committee and support the aims of ELTRP).
Each group that has full membership has two voting delegates who can vote on decisions affecting ELTRP at our Open Meetings and at the AGM.

Individual Membership

Membership of ELTRP is open to individuals who are not covered by an existing tenants and residents association.

Associate Membership

Associate Membership is available for informal tenants and residents groups that do not meet the requirements of full membership (i.e. they may work informally, do not have a constitution and do not hold 2 open meetings).
At present, associate members cannot vote, or be elected on the ELTRP Executive Committee.
